Summary Though Scenes of Clerical Life was published at a time when religious questions were hotly debated, George Eliot's choice of subject for her fictional debut is, on the face of it, surprising, since she had lost her Christian belief long before and was closely associated with the progressive, free-thinking opinion of her day. Yet George Eliot's mature views were never simple ones, and under the surface orthodoxy of the Scenes, we can detect signs of her search of a religion of Humanity and of her desire for conciliation with whatever was best in Christianity. It was he second book, Adam Bede, that swept George Eliot to fame, but with her first she had already demonstrated remarkable gifts and produced a form of fiction which was in several respects revolutionary.
